Green Day
Green Day Biography Billie Joe and Mike, both from the small California town of Rodeo, met when they were 15, and started the band Sweet Children. Under that name, they released a few 7"s, which contain the songs on today's Kerplunk! In 1989, they changed their name to "Green Day" after their song "Green Day," which is about a day devoted to smoking pot. It was that year that they had an audition with Lookout Records. It was held in the Mendocino Mountains in a shack without electricity. To top things off, it was done in the rain. However, they were signed within days.

On Lookout Records, they recorded their first album, 39/Smooth, along with the Slappy EP and 1000 Hours EP. These are all combined today on 1039 SOSH. Mike and Billie took on John Kiftmeyer, aka Al Sobrante, as their drummer. He left Green Day to go off to college. Soon after, the 2 remaining members of Green Day ran into Tre Cool at Gilman Street. After finding out that he had been playing drums since 12 for the Lookouts, they asked him to be in their band.

The three of them released "Kerplunk" on Lookout Records (which contains Laurie L's story) and toured for months. On this album, Tre sings his country western "Dominated Love Slave."Their transportation was Tre's father, who was a trucker. They began to become successful at htis time, so left Lookout Records and moved onto Reprise Records (Warner Brothers.) During 1993, they recorded dookie, and toured with Bad Religion.

The next year is the turning point for Green Day. Both Billie Joe and Tre became fathers, and Billie Joe got married in the middle of the summer. Dookie became a major release, selling over 7 million copies (at least.) They toured with Lollapalooza, and appeared at Woodstock where they instigated the famous mud fight. It was after that performace that people really began to take notice- they were in Rolling Stone, Spin, those stupid heavy metal magazine, and even the sickening teeny-bopper magazines. They appeared on all the late shows. Longview, Basketcase, and When I Come Around were played on MTV. Those songs and She and Welcome to Paradise got heavy radio play.

Their sucess went on into 1995, until they released what most people thought at the time was their "second cd," Insomniac. The first single "Geek Stink Breath" was banned from MTV soon after it was first played, due to its "graphic content." The idea for the teeth-pulling was BJ's idea. He got it from a friend of his who's always got dental problems. Soon after, around Febuary of 96, "Brain Stew/Jaded" was being played non-stop on MTV and the radio. This was followed by "Walking Contradiction," which was on MTV's "Most Dangerous Videos." The song "86" off of Insomniac is about Gilman Street, and was performed on one of the late shows. The Riverdales joined Green Day on their Insomniac tour.

Finally, on October 14, 1998, Green Day released their long awaited "Nimrod," which I consider one of their best cds. They began touring almost immediately. "Hitching A Ride" became their first single long before the cd was even out, and was followed by "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" and "Redundant." I would just like to take this time to announce that it is Good Riddance (Time of Your Life), not Time of Your Life (Good Riddance)! Really people, consult the cd. Once again, MTV began showing them again, along with the late shows. On Nimrod, they ventured out into other kinds of music, like ska/oi! on King for a Day. Even trying new things, Green Day still sounds great, and you can tell they really haven't changed for the worse if you listen to "Prosthetic Head," or the middle of "Haushinka." They still have that Green Day sound that makes them so great.
